Historic Win for Indigenous Inclusion in Global Conservation Efforts
4 November 2024
In a landmark decision at the United Nations Biodiversity Conference in Cali, Colombia, delegates agreed to establish a new subsidiary body that formally includes Indigenous peoples in decisions on nature conservation. This decision acknowledges the vital role Indigenous communities play in preserving ecosystems and combating climate change.
Indigenous delegations celebrated the announcement with cheers and tears, marking it as a significant step in recognising their traditional knowledge systems. Sushil Raj, Executive Director of the Rights and Communities Global Program at the Wildlife Conservation Society, praised the decision as a breakthrough in valuing Indigenous expertise for global biodiversity management.
Additionally, the agreement requires major corporations to share the financial benefits of research using natural genetic resources. The Jimmy Nelson Foundation joins in celebrating this milestone, which elevates the voices of Indigenous peoples in conservation.
