‘As They Pass By – Walls of Connection’

A New Indigenous Mural in Mexico

The Jimmy Nelson Foundation has started with yet another round of As They Pass By – Walls of Connection in South America! After a great success with the first mural in Bogota (Colombia), we are now realizing indigenous mural art in Mexico, at the cultural city centre of Querétaro, (Centro Educativo y Cultural del Estado de Querétaro). It will be the second mural of the year in collaboration with MasterPeace.

The mural will be communally painted by various indigenous artists, on November 9th to 11th. Leading artist of the project is Victor López and he is working together with members of the La Madriguera Gráfica collective. Most of the artists have Zapoteca roots, one of the 56 ethnic groups in Mexico.

The cultural workshops have already started this week and you can follow them on the #takeover by MasterPeace at the Jimmy Nelson Foundation’s social media these weeks. In these workshops all participants engage in researching indigenous Mexican culture, which is put into the mural designs. An important cultural feature of the mural is the calavera (skull), which plays a symbolic role in the celebration of the Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos).

We started an artistic research about the calavera (skull) that will be an important part of the background of our mural. The calavera plays important symbolic role in the celebration of the Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) in Mexico. #TakeOver by MasterPeace América Latina. #AsTheyPassByWallsOfConnection #CulturalDiversity
